brrrrrrrrrr
tell me again why it's so cold in april? oh yeah, that's right. i live in virginia where the weather is confused. tonight it's supposed to FROST. but thursday is in the 70s again so i can happily return to spring wardrobe type things.
so i dropped dry cleaning off before work this morning, something i haven't done since i've lived here, but something my own mother does every week. so maybe for that reason, i felt more grown up. weird, i know.
school's wrapping up and all that good stuff, then it's SUMMER! no work! oh wait... well, no school work.

starbucks barista
so i'm applying to starbucks to work as a barista (and so is cassie!) - i could use the extra cash, and i don't even think it will feel like work. the application asks the following questions (my proposed responses are in parentheses):
-Have you ever visited a Starbucks Coffee location? Where? Describe your experience. (YUMMY!)
-What do you like about coffee? (EVERYTHING!)
-Why would you like to work for Starbucks Coffee Company? (BECAUSE THEY ROCK)
stay tuned to see if we get the jobs...

blog neglect
so my grandma told me that she used to have my blog as her homepage, but on account of my infrequent updates, i'm now only a favorite link. now i've been inspired to make a little more effort in the blog department.
it's wednesday, and it's almost may. don't even get me started on how fast this year is going by.
it was really foggy this morning- but i liked it. when i moved here, i used to get really frustrated about the thick fog when i couldn't see where to drive, but now i know the road, so it's actually kind of nice. made me forget i was even driving to work. so i listened to my john mayer cd (recently rediscovered) and thought about "the kind of mornings that seem to last all afternoon."

excerpt from "sunday morning" by wallace stevens
II
Why should she give her bounty to the dead?
What is divinity if it can come
Only in silent shadows and in dreams?
Shall she not find in comforts of the sun,
In pungent fruit and bright, green wings, or else
In any balm or beauty of the earth,
Things to be cherished like the thought of heaven?
Divinity must live within herself:
Passion of rain, or moods in falling snow;
Grievings in loneliness, or unsubdued
Elations when the forest blooms; gusty
Emotions on wet roads on autumn nights;
All pleasures and all pains, remembering
The bough of summer and the winter branch.
These are the measures destined for her soul.

it's april 7th already?
happy birthday to billie holiday! born on this day in 1915.
it's getting warmer here in virginia. which is good, because i was getting ready to high-tail it back to arizona. this whole "snow in april" thing was getting to be just a bit too much for me.
tonight? board games and whatnot. whatnot should include paying bills, taxes, and homework... but who am i kidding?

The New Poetry Handbook
by Mark Strand
1 If a man understands a poem,
he shall have troubles.
2 If a man lives with a poem,
he shall die lonely.
3 If a man lives with two poems,
he shall be unfaithful to one.
4 If a man conceives of a poem,
he shall have one less child.
5 If a man conceives of two poems,
he shall have two children less.
6 If a man wears a crown on his head as he writes,
he shall be found out.
7 If a man wears no crown on his head as he writes,
he shall deceive no one but himself.
8 If a man gets angry at a poem,
he shall be scorned by men.
9 If a man continues to be angry at a poem,
he shall be scorned by women.
10 If a man publicly denounces poetry,
his shoes will fill with urine.
11 If a man gives up poetry for power,
he shall have lots of power.
12 If a man brags about his poems,
he shall be loved by fools.
13 If a man brags about his poems and loves fools,
he shall write no more.
14 If a man craves attention because of his poems,
he shall be like a jackass in moonlight.
15 If a man writes a poem and praises the poem of a fellow,
he shall have a beautiful mistress.
16 If a man writes a poem and praises the poem of a fellow overly,
he shall drive his mistress away.
17 If a man claims the poem of another,
his heart shall double in size.
18 If a man lets his poems go naked,
he shall fear death.
19 If a man fears death,
he shall be saved by his poems.
20 If a man does not fear death,
he may or may not be saved by his poems.
21 If a man finishes a poem,
he shall bathe in the blank wake of his passion
and be kissed by white paper.

lyrics (snippet) dose of the day
"See I'm all about them words
Over numbers, unencumbered numbered words
Hundreds of pages, pages, pages forwards
More words then I had ever heard and I feel so alive"
Over numbers, unencumbered numbered words
Hundreds of pages, pages, pages forwards
More words then I had ever heard and I feel so alive"
spring back? spring forward?
ah, i can never remember. but according to my calendar, it's spring forward, so we're losing an hour at 2 a.m. on sunday -- sorry arizona, we're three hours apart again!
today is crazy meeting day, so this will be a short post, maybe followed by a literary posting of sorts, maybe not.
today is also relay for life day! it's supposed to be 40 degrees and raining which is PERFECT for an 18 hour relay in the name of the search for a cancer cure. jules and are are walking the first 4 hour block this evening starting at 6 -- we'll be in head to toe pink -- our team is specifically supporting breast cancer, themed "think pink!"
have a wonderful weekend!

what's this about a holiday?
so i didn't even realize that i don't have to work next friday, being that it's good friday. so that's exciting. sounds like a few people will be around for easter weekend, so we're planning a possible trip to dollywood on saturday. for those of you who don't know, dollywood is dolly parton's very own amusement park in tennessee, and it's AWESOME.
